Comodynes Self Tanning Towelette

You guys wanted to see what would happen if the pale girl used the tanning towels so of course I did! These Comodynes Self Tanning Towelette's came in my June 2012 Birchbox and I was a little skeptical about using them but for you guys I did it!

I really had mixed thoughts about this product because the first day I used it I didn't think it was working at all. Three hours after application I was a little toasty but it was barely noticeable. Little did I know the real results wouldn't show up until the morning!

If you look closely you can see the line around my ankle where I didn't really use the towelette and a bit of stripe on the side of my leg. It wasn't horrible and the color was actually really natural looking like I had just spent a day in the sun. I think my thighs turned out the best they were very even in color and had no streaks. For my calves they weren't too bad either except for the stripe and obvious ankle lines. I was afraid to put it on the skin around my ankles because I didn't want it to turn out too dark so I avoided that area but apparently not all that carefully lol
Now I still had another towelette left so I thought what the heck I'll go ahead and do it again. I waited a full day between the applications of these.

Second Application

In hindsight I think I probably should have waited a few more days to go thru with the second application because it turned out quite dark on me. This time I went a little crazy on my feet and well you can for sure tell! For the most part the tan is even and even with my mishap spots I'm able to make it look natural by adding some bronzer. I would say if you are pale to wait a full two or three days before you go in for a second application that way it wont be so dark.

As for the product itself it smells nice not like other self tanners I've used and while the scent does change after having it on for a few hours it is not unbearable. They say one towelette is good enough for you whole body but I think you will get more even coverage by using two. One for you legs and another for you upper body. On the second time around I did also use this on my arms and they turned out really subtle I think because I had already used the towelette all over my legs and there wasn't much product left on it by the time I go to them.

My advice is to use these in sections say your doing your legs start with your thighs and do the tops for each leg and then move onto the back, I found doing it that way ensures you have the same amount of product going in those areas so you get even coverage. Also it is important to use this in a circular motion and not in swipes. Trust me you will have better results that way.

Now before I used these I did exfoliate and moisturize on both occasions and I think that really helped. I should have paid more attention to my feet tho for sure. I didn't use anything fancy I just mixed some white sugar with some massage oil I have and used it in the shower all over my legs and arms.

I have been thinking about repurchasing this product but I don't know that I actually will because it is quite a process to make sure this turns out good. I think now that I know what I did wrong in my first application I would also have a better chance of getting it right on the first try. If you are really pale like me you might want to let wait until the next day to judge your results because for me the full color was really not showing up after 3 hours and it got much darker by the morning.

These retail for $14.99 for a pack of 8 towelettes and can be purchased from Birchbox right now I'm not sure were else you could get them from. Overall I don't think they are a bad product but they sure do take a lot of patience to make sure you get good coverage. I think if I do end up using these again I will wait longer between applications so I don't turn out quite so dark.

What do you think of my Comodynes Fake Tan, does it look natural or like an oopma loompa?

  3. That was what I did wrong the first time, I swiped it on vs. applied it in a circular motion. I have a bottle of st.tropez self tanner that I am going to try. It is probably the best smelling product i've come across and the application is a white lotion, it isn't already tinted. It was a 2oz sample from sephora. I'll let you know how it goes. I think this product turned out quite well for the most part.

  7. I am pretty impressed with the wipes! I was very curious to see if they would work or not. How was the smell? Did it smell like typical self tanner?

    1. The smell wasn't bad at all when first applying it was really pleasant actually it didn't really start to smell until hours later and then I think it was more so because I was out and it was hot so I sweating!

  8. I think this is much more safe than tanning. My husband loves to tan and I am truly concerned about the aging effect it's having on him. He use to spend his summers in Florida and Myrtle beach. I am older than he is but because of the line around the eyes you cannot tell. This sound time consuming but as I said much safer than the sun. You guys should really consider the trade off.

    1. Agreed. I used to love hanging out in the sun and tanning beds but my skin is paying the price for it now.

  10. I've been curious about these so thanks for the review! They seem like they would be less messy but it's still quite a process for application that you're describing. Maybe I'll try it when I'm done with my self tanning lotion.

  18. This product looks pretty awesome, mostly because from your pictures, it looks really natural, which is kind of the point of self-tanners. I really dislike self-tanners that make you look like a walking pumpkin or like you took a dip in an ocean of Doritos, so it's great that these tanning towels didn't do that. Not bad at all!

  20. You are AWESOME, Ashley! For the sake of the blog, yeah? :)

I think the towel version of self-tanners is pretty much inspired. I used those lotions that gradually make you darker, but they have never worked on me since I'm a sloppy lotioner. hahaha

  22. Look at you--- putting it all out there for your readers! I have never used a self-tanner (I feel like the chemicals can't be that good for me!), but the results (especially after day 1!) look pretty great! I think for a special occasion there is definitely a place!

    1. This one is actually not loaded with synthetics and dyes it uses a sugar to give your skin color so it's much less harmful then other self tanners on the market. The sugar is uses has come under some controversy but I think it is a safe alternative to tanning in the sun. It also is paraben free :)
