POPSUGAR Must Have October 2013

Purchased By Me

I don't even know where to begin to express my disappointment for this POPSUGAR Must Have box. I am so discouraged by the quality this box lacks that I'm not even going to put my referral link on this post. None of these items speak to me as "must have" products. To me these say we've run out of creative and unique items so were going to turn this into a box full of advertisements with repeat companies thrown in for good measure.

Allow me introduce everyone to the hot mess that is the POPSUGAR Must Have box for October.

The Can't Cook Book: Recipes for the Absolutely Terrified! by Jessica Seinfeld | MSRP $27.99
This is the only product in this box that I would consider a must have. It's an interesting book that guides cook's threw the basics of well, cooking. Is this book something I will get use out of? Sadly no because most everything it covers I already have a good handle on and the recipes while interesting I don't need a cook book to achieve. Growing up with two sisters who's extent of cooking is boiling water and asking if eggs expire leaves one to learn to cook quickly or starve!

NYX Cosmetics | Liquid Liner and Smokey Shadow Palette | MSRP $6.00 & $7.00
Okay now don't get me wrong NYX is a better than average drugstore brand however it's just that a drugstore brand. I pick this up at Ulta for 40% off or on BOGO throughout the majority of the year. When subscribing to a box like POPSUGAR I expect better than drugstore quality.

Gorjana & Griffin | Bali Bead Bracelet | MSRP $45.00
I'm starting to think POPSUGAR owns stock in Gorjana & Griffin or something because almost every month we are graced with a product from them. I do like this bracelet even though it's yet again GOLD... Hurry someone let POPSUGAR in on the secret that there is more to jewelry than just gold toned items!

Julep for POPSUGAR DUO | MSRP $18.00 & $14.00
Okay for those who don't' know Julep also has a subscription service for nail polish. I see this more as a product that is advertising to get you to sign up for their service than an actual "must have". I will say the color is nice I haven't had a chance to try it out.

Jane Tran | Bobby Pins | MSRP $12.00
These are at least something that will be useful, you can never have too many bobby pins.

The Wet Brush | MSRP $14.00
I wish you guys could have seen my face when I saw this brush. This brush has a lot of hype surrounding it because every beauty blogger and their grandmother are going on and on about how great it is. I'm not buying into the "this brush is the best thing since sliced bread" hype because this brush is cheap looking and feeling. To go along with the cheap look and feel it smells like chemicals. Do I really want to put this repulsive smelling brush on my wet hair? I think not!

The Crispery | Halloween Crisypycake | MSRP $3.49
I've had The Crispery before so I was happy to have this in the box at least it's something I will actually get to enjoy!

Stitch Fix | $20 coupon code
Oh look another advertisement for yet another subscription company...

I signed up for the must have service to find new and unique items that I wouldn't normally be able to find on my own. I did not sign up to be bombarded with advertisements to other subscription companies or to receive sub par products. I am beyond disappointed with this selection of items and with the upcoming price increase on this subscription I don't see myself sticking around. If I hadn't loved this subscription for over a year now I would drop them because of this box. My loyalty to them can only be extended so far, I will not stand for being sent regurgitated items from other subscription companies or have advertising forced upon me. I'm paying for this box keep your advertisements on your website! Lastly I fully understand that this is a business and they are in it to make a profit but in my opinion they are not delivering on what they have offered. /end rant

This box's MSRP totals up to $147.48 but just because the price is high doesn't mean that it doesn't suck. Also keep in mind many of these products can be found for far less than the manufacturers suggested retail price (MSRP).

What are your thoughts on the POPSUGAR Must Have box for October?

  1. Aw. Sorry you're disappointed :( I actually really love everything in this box! But, NYX isn't available near me, I needed a new brush, I love cookbooks, and I actually think the bracelet is cute. I hope next month makes you happier! :)

  2. The wet brush is actually fantastic!! I saw that it was in the box and was jealous! They use them at Fantastic SAMs on wet hair and it detangles so easily. A must for little girls and adults of course :)

  4. That's good to know, however I can't get past it's strong chemical smell.

  5. I couldn't agree with you more. I was EXTREMELY disappointed in this box. So much so that I've decided to cancel my subscription. I had high hopes that they would step up their game for this box seeing as they'll be increasing the price and wouldn't want to give any of their current subscribers any additional motivation to cancel, but they did the opposite for me.

At the risk of giving away my age, I thought this box was geared to an audience about 20 years younger than me. I've been cooking since I was a pre-teen (i.e. ages ago) and was, quite frankly, offended to receive the cookbook -- it's going to be donated. The makeup is drugstore-quality -- most definitely NOT "must have" (at least give me something Sephora or a high-end department store carries). Those "bobby pins" are pretty impractical and gaudy. The entire point of bobby pins is that they disappear into your hair -- these things are huge and sparkly, wtf? Along the hair lines, that brush is never touching my hair. I have fragile curly hair and water + a brush is a recipe for disaster -- I don't care who says otherwise. I will stick with my wide-toothed comb thank-you-very-much. Also, I've had it with the G&G jewelry much less the crappy string bracelets (didn't they give us something like this not too long ago -- or maybe it was in one of the VIP boxes?), and I'm with you, they must own stock in G&G; that or G&G is desperate to get their name out there that they'll willing to over-saturate what they see as their market. As for the Julep polish and Stitch Fix promos, I'm so tired of the cross-promotion. Julep's been around for a while now and I find it hard to believe that most of the musthave subscribers aren't already aware of Julep. If we wanted Julep, we'd have signed up for Julep. We signed up for a musthave box, give me must have items. Similar thoughts re: stitch fix. I've already tried it and didn't like it. I don't want the supposed "value" of my musthave box being inflated by promos to other subscription services.

Ugh! I am SO upset by this box -- what a waste of money.
